Our Cemetery's Rich History
Chugwater Cemetery, established in 1912, is a serene resting place located on the high plains of southeast Wyoming. It features the historic Iowa Flats Methodist Episcopal Church building, adding a unique aspect to its rich history. The first burials occurred near the church upon the tragic deaths of Minnie Warren and her two year old daughter Opal. They were lost in a spring snowstorm while walking to the home of Minnie's parents on April 25, 1911. With an obvious need, the cemetery was officially incorporated the following year as the Chugwater Cemetery Association.

Site of the Historic Iowa Flats Methodist Episcopal Church
Established in 1908, a site of historical significance in the settlement of southeast Wyoming.

Located on the high plains of southeast Wyoming, Chugwater Cemetery features the historic Iowa Flats Methodist Episcopal Church, adding a unique aspect to its rich history. Early homesteader Robert Kletzing staked a claim about five miles east of Chugwater. He was part of a group of settlers from Iowa who wanted to build a Methodist church for the Iowa Flats community. Robert donated the parcel of land, and the church was built in 1910 for a cost of $1,600.00.
The first pastor, Rev. L. P. Fagan and his wife Alice were also from Iowa, and homesteaded on 160 acres near the church. In 1909 there were only a few settlers on the Iowa Flats and local families organized a Sunday School which first met in the Chugwater school, then in a barn, and when it got too cold in neighboring homes. The spring of 1910 brought many changes to the Iowa Flats. The Sunday School first met in the new church building in May, 1910 and the population of the Iowa Flats grew to over 500 within a five mile radius.
Today the historic church building is owned by the Chugwater Cemetery District and is available for funerals and memorial services.
