Our Historical Significance
A Peaceful Resting Place

Nestled behind a Ponderosa Pine and Cedar windbreak, the cemetery provides a tranquil space for reflection and remembrance in a beautiful rural setting. At Chugwater Cemetery, we cherish the memories of our loved ones by providing a well cared for resting place.

On August 7, 1912, a group of Iowa Flats men, Homer C. Mabie, Archie O. Blow, Albert Evans, William E Slater, and Ross D. Burhans, filed a certificate of incorporation with the Secretary of State's Office in Cheyenne to form the "Chugwater Cemetery Association". In 1978 the "Chugwater Cemetery District" was formed in order to provide funding for the maintenance and operation of the cemetery. Even so it is still locally known by many as the Iowa Flats Cemetery because it is the location of the historic Methodist Episcopal Church building of the same name. Although no longer operated as a church, the building is used each Memorial Day to remember those who served our country in military service and remains a historic landmark in our community. This monument commemorates the historical significance of the contributions made by those early homesteaders to the settling of the surrounding countryside known as the Iowa Flats. Many of them rest in this cemetery as a testament to their ingenuity and perseverance.
